Using Preferred Providers - Outside of Alaska

The Plan uses Beech Street, a preferred provider network, to obtain provider discounts for services received outside of the State of Alaska.  Beech Street is a large healthcare network that offers a wide choice of doctors and facilities.  If you choose a preferred provider, benefits will be paid according to your plan’s normal deductibles, coinsurance rates, and out-of-pocket limits.

To find out the Beech Street providers in your area, you may call (877) 478-1246 and select the option 5 or you can access Beech Street's website.  The web site allows you to search for physicians and facilities by area.  In addition, the web site offers patients a Health and Wellness section with information about healthy lifestyles and prevention.  It also has information on certain chronic diseases and current information.

If you choose a hospital outside Alaska and that facility is not in the Beech Street network, your plan’s reimbursement rate will be reduced by 20% reduction for the first $50,000 of allowable expenses. The 20% reduction will not be applied to your out-of-pocket limits.

For example, if your current plan provides 90% reimbursement, and you do not use a preferred hospital when you obtain services outside Alaska, your coinsurance rate will be reduced to 70% for the first $50,000 of allowable expenses. If Beech Street has no preferred facilities within 25 miles of where you receive medical care, this reduction will not apply.
